Structural engineering for concrete, wood, steel and masonry

Structural designs for buildings, retaining walls, seawalls, metal building foundations, pools and outdoor aluminium structures, prepared from your plans and site information. Loads, member sizes and connections are documented so plan reviewers and builders can follow the design.

A structural set only helps if the builder can follow it

AM's drawings show the load path from roof to foundation, with the design basis written on the sheets.

A drawing set you have to interpret

What an unclear design leaves open

? Which beam carries this point load?

? What soil bearing value was the footing sized for?

? Is this connection detailed, or left to the field?

? Which code edition and design loads were used?

? Does the wall design include surcharge and drainage?

A design you can check

What AM Engineering delivers

✓ Design criteria with code edition, loads and soil values on the drawings

✓ Load path traced from roof framing to foundation

✓ Member sizes, reinforcement and connections detailed on the sheets

✓ Missing geotechnical or site data listed as stated assumptions

✓ Calculations that match the drawing set member for member

What we design →

Nine structural scopes, each designed to its own loads

Concrete, wood, steel and masonry structures, walls that hold back soil and water, plus metal building foundations, pools and outdoor aluminium structures.

Concrete

Footings, slabs on grade, grade beams, columns and elevated slabs, with reinforcement sized and detailed.

Wood

Joists, rafters, beams, headers, shear walls and hold-downs for residential and light commercial framing.

Steel

Beams, columns, braced and moment frames, base plates and connection design.

Masonry

Reinforced CMU walls, bond beams, lintels and masonry shear walls.

Retaining walls

Cantilever and gravity walls designed for soil pressure, surcharge, drainage and stability.

Seawalls

Seawalls and bulkheads designed for soil and water loads, with tie-backs and toe protection where required.

PEMB foundations

Footings, piers, grade beams, slabs and anchor bolt plans for pre-engineered metal buildings, designed from the supplier's column reactions, uplift and thrust.

Pools

Concrete and shotcrete pool shells, bond beams, raised walls, spas and steps, designed for soil, water and surcharge loads.

Aluminium structures

Outdoor aluminium engineering, delivered in 5 business days. [Add scope details]

How it works →

From plans to a checked structural design in five steps

Every assignment follows the same review path, whether it is one beam or a full building.

1

Send your files

Architectural plans, site address, geotechnical report and any existing structural drawings.

2

We confirm criteria

Code edition, wind, seismic, snow and live loads, soil values and deliverables.

3

We design

Load path, member sizes, foundations and connections are calculated and drafted.

4

We check

Calculations are checked against the drawings, details and general notes before issue.

5

You receive the package

Structural drawings, calculations and a design criteria summary. [Confirm PE stamp]

Revisions and plan review

Reviewer comments are answered with revised sheets and a response letter that records what changed.

Accepted inputs

Architectural CAD or PDF plans, surveys, geotechnical reports, and photos or field measurements for existing structures.

What you receive →

What every structural package includes

Drawings and calculations are issued together, so the plan reviewer and the builder read the same design.

The structural package

✓ Foundation, framing and roof framing plans

✓ Sections, details and connection schedules

✓ General notes with the design criteria

✓ Structural calculations report

✓ Plan review response letter when comments return

Coordinated with your architect

Grid lines, openings and floor levels are checked against your architectural set.

Loads stated on the sheets

Wind, seismic, snow and live loads are listed so a reviewer can check the basis.

Delivery format [To confirm]

Add file formats here (for example PDF sheets, DWG files, calculation report).

See a sample structural set

Show buyers a redacted drawing and calculation sample before they send plans. [Add sample file]

Who it's for →

Structural engineering shaped to your project

Nine client types across residential, commercial, waterfront, metal building and pool work. Each gets a design package shaped to how they build or submit.

Homeowners

Beams, footings and framing for additions and remodels

Beam and header sizing, wall removal, footing design, permit drawings

Homebuilders

Repeatable structural sets for new homes

Foundation and framing plans, shear wall layout, hold-down schedules

Architects and designers

A structural set coordinated with your drawings

Structural plans and details, calculations, plan review responses

General contractors

Designs that answer field and permit questions

Foundation and framing design, connection details, RFI responses

Developers and owners

Structure for commercial and multifamily buildings

Concrete, steel and wood framing systems, foundations, design criteria

Waterfront owners

Walls that hold back soil and water

Seawalls, bulkheads, tie-backs and toe protection details

Site and civil teams

Retaining walls that fit the grading plan

Cantilever and gravity walls, drainage details, wall elevations

Metal building suppliers

Foundation designs for the buildings you sell

Footing and pier design, anchor bolt plans, slab design

Pool builders

Structural pool designs for permit

Shell reinforcement, bond beams, spas and raised walls

Why AM Engineering →

Built so the design can be checked

Seven habits that run through every structural package.

Load path shown

Loads are traced from roof to foundation, so a reviewer can follow how every member is supported

Criteria on the sheets

Code edition, design loads and soil values appear on the drawings, not only in the calculations

Calcs match drawings

Every member in the calculations appears on the plans with the same size and label

Assumptions on record

Missing geotechnical or site data is listed as a stated assumption, never hidden

Connections detailed

Hold-downs, base plates and bearing details are drawn, not left to the field

Coordinated with architecture

Grid lines, openings and levels are checked against the architectural set

Plan review support

Reviewer comments are answered with revised sheets and a response letter

FAQ →

Structural engineering questions

Codes, stamps, soils and revisions.

Do you stamp structural drawings? [To confirm]

Add the states where AM's engineers hold a PE license.

Which building code do you design to?

The code edition adopted by your jurisdiction, for example the IBC or IRC with local amendments. It is stated on the drawings.

Do I need a geotechnical report?

For most foundations and retaining walls, yes. Without one, presumptive soil values are used and listed as an assumption.

Can you design changes to an existing building?

Yes, from existing drawings or field measurements and photos. Unknown conditions are listed for verification on site.

Do you answer plan reviewer comments?

Yes. Comments are answered with revised sheets and a response letter.

How long does a structural design take? [To confirm]

Add the typical turnaround for a residential project and a commercial project.

How is structural design priced? [To confirm]

Add the pricing basis, for example a fixed fee per project or per sheet.

What do you need from the metal building supplier?

The reaction drawings with column loads and the anchor bolt or base plate drawings.

Do you design the metal building itself?

No. The building supplier engineers the steel frame. AM designs the foundation that supports it.

Can you design a pool on a slope or near a house?

Yes. Surcharge from nearby foundations and sloped ground is included in the design.
